I'm Mad as Hell... and I'm Going to Sleep on It
I'm Mad as Hell... and I'm Going to Sleep on It: Day 1 Last week found me disappointed. First, Fitzgerald hits the White House with what now looks like a very weak punch. At the end of the day, GWB could pardon Libby, and there isn't anything anyone could do about it. Worse, Rove still has his job. Worse still, GWB has named YACC (Yet Another Catholic Conservative) to the Supreme Court, and it looks as if there really isn't anything the Dems can do, other than make noise and rev their engine... until the Reps take away their car keys. Alito - no ally to individual rights What worries me most about Alito is the fact that he seems extremely unwilling to recognize that individual rights and personal freedom are guaranteed under the Constitution. What I'm reading tells me that he almost always comes down on the side of institutions, governments and businesses when confronted by individual rights challenges. To me, this is reading the Constitution exactly backwards. So, unless Roberts is very different from what we expect him to be, it looks as if GWB has succeeded in packing SCOTUS with anti-libertarians. This is exceedingly ironic when one considers that the libertarians are the ones who, election after election, have given the edge to the Reps. Hypocrisy, anyone? Then there's this whole Culture of Life BS. Really. The Catholic church has said that capital punishment is a sin against God. So, why is it that Bishops & Cardinals want to deny sacraments to politicians who support a woman's right to choose, yet are utterly silent on capital punishment? Why not carry the culture of life argument all the way across the field? And, why stop there? Shouldn't sacraments be denied to politicians who support the invasion of other countries on trumped-up evidence. Take Afghanistan. Were the Taliban good guys? Not by a long shot. However, they got where the got because the U.S. supported them against the Soviets. So, suddenly, on September 12, 2001, they're our enemies? 20 or so terrorists, mostly from Saudi Arabia, board planes and crash them into buildings. So, what do we do? Attack Afghanistan, of course. Whoops! No terrorists there. Attack Iraq! Whoops, no terrorists there. So, let's keep attacking Iraq until the terrorists come to their defense. Yep. Plenty of terrorists in Iraq now! Good job! That ought to win GWB the Nobel War Prize. What? There's no Nobel War Prize? Who knew...? All those hundreds of billions of dollars and tens of thousands of lives... wasted. Liberal plan Here's the plan. Listen up, Liberals. You need to march your fannies down to the local gun shop and buy guns. Wear Kerry buttons. Wear Jane Fonda Buttons. Wear Greenpeace buttons. Wear ACLU buttons. Wear whatever liberal badges you can find... and buy guns. Once the neo-cons see liberals getting armed to the teeth, we'll have gun control so fast in this country that it'll make your heads spin. On second thought, leave the liberal memorabilia at home. Wear T-shirts that say "Dirty Harry was a sissy!" Because, what we need isn't gun control. It's guns. Because the fascists have taken over, and by the time mainstream Americans wake up from their collective stupor, it'll be too late. The only people armed will be the fascists themselves. I'm not optimistic. I sure hope Canada doesn't have oil, because, if the Reps steal the 2008 election, I have a feeling a lot of us are going to be blogging from across the border.
