The Real Power Elite Don’t Care about Tomorrow’s Election
In a private conversation, someone said that they’ll be happy when there’s “a real liberal in the White House.”
.
I say Don’t hold your breath. I don’t think it will ever happen... at least not in a meaningful way. I suspect that almost all of the electable politicians in the U.S. are working from the same “big picture” playbook. Whether deliberately or accidentally, they distract the electorate by “arguing” over things that don’t really matter to them personally--abortion, same sex marriage, marijuana, prayer in public schools, etc.--and while the electorate is distracted, they use the mechanisms of government to funnel money to the real power elite.
.
No matter who is in political power, the energy, defense, and health capitalists continue to make money hand-over-fist at the expense of the population of the world. Bill Clinton wasn’t above shooting the occasional missile at targets in the middle east... Hilary won’t be, either. Bill Clinton talked a lot about energy and health, but after 8 years, we (the world) were no better off than we were when he began.
.
Meaningfully different candidates, such as Ralph Nader, will never get elected anymore. They pose too much of a threat to the status quo and the power elite. Jimmy Carter posed an enormous threat, but got elected anyway. He refused to be controlled, and we see what they did to him to discredit and disgrace his presidency. (Anyone who thinks that the embassy takeover in Iran was the result of failed Carter policies wasn’t paying attention.) And even Mr. Clean Jimmy Carter succumbed to industry... I lost complete faith in him when he gave a speech to the tobacco industry pledging to “make smoking even safer than it already is.” (Smoking is perhaps one of the best examples of how the power elite in the U.S. sacrifice health/welfare for large corporate interests.)
.
So, at best, we can argue over the crumbs of civil liberties that we’re allowed to argue over. Meanwhile, our taxes go to funding causes in which we have no voice, no control, and no say whatsoever. I’d love to see a big democratic victory tomorrow. Civil liberties might make a bit of a comeback. But, I’m not dumb enough to believe that such a victory will have any overall effect on Pax Americana.
.
I’ve heard recent rumblings that Rupert Murdoch, the largest media control power in the world, has shown signs of switching sides in the civil liberties war, and is actively contributing to Hilary’s war chest. We’re strictly over-the-air television consumers at present, so I can’t watch Faux News to see if there are any subtle signs of a shift yet. It will be interesting to see if there is a shift over the next few years. But, if there is a shift, it’s because the urbanization of the U.S. has turned the tides, and the power elite is going to have to start dealing from a different deck of cards to keep us mollified and appeased. All they’d really be doing, however, is moving the needles and tubes from our right arm and inserting it into the left.
